California Governor Candidates Clash

California governor candidates Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton held their only scheduled general election debate on CNN in Burbank. The debate came just before mail ballots were set to reach voters. The race will replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, with Becerra leading recent polls in heavily Democratic California. The candidates fought over taxes, gas prices, housing, utility bills and homelessness. Hilton proposed cutting income taxes on the first $150,000 of earnings and lowering major household costs. Becerra said that plan would help the wealthy while hurting schools, health care and housing. Becerra accused Hilton of favoring immigrants who look like him; Hilton said he would enforce the law and target dangerous criminals. Polls still showed Becerra well ahead.
