Tropical Storm Lala was moving away from Hawaii Sunday after weakening from a Category 1 hurricane and passing south of the Big Island without making landfall, leaving more than 200,000 utility customers without power across the islands. One person died in a storm-related car crash on the Big Island, and officials reported at least 100 homes damaged, including some swept off foundations. The storm produced hurricane-force gusts and rainfall totals approaching 3 feet, triggering flash floods, landslides, washed-out roads and river torrents across multiple islands.
